Have you ever thought about fostering, but the process seems a little daunting?
If so, we totally understand! After the training classes have begun, our agency begins the home study process. To help you get an understanding of this process, we thought it would be helpful to share answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.
How long does the process take?
We work to complete the home study within 90 days. This can be quicker (or longer) depending on your family’s availability for home visits and how quickly you are able to get the necessary paperwork together.
How many times do you need to come to my home?
We will complete a minimum of two visits to the home for a single parent and a minimum of three visits for a two-parent family.
Does my home need to meet safety requirements on the first visit?
No! We are happy to complete a walk-through of your home with you on the first visit to establish whether there are any changes that need to be made before the final home visit. The most frequent change that families need to make to their home is creating a cabinet or closet to lock hazardous materials such as cleaners and medications. A complete list of home safety requirements is provided during the training process or before, if you would prefer.
What if I have guns in my home?
Foster parents are allowed to have guns, but they must be secure at all times to ensure the safety of all children placed in the home. If you do have a permit to carry, the gun must be secure and on your person. When not on your person, the gun has to be locked with a trigger lock and ammunition locked separately. This includes during time when you are asleep. If you do not have a permit to carry, the guns must be locked with a trigger lock and ammunition locked separately at all times.
Who do you need to speak with?
We speak with everyone who lives in the home including all adults and children. We want to get to know your family to ensure that we are making the best possible decisions regarding the child or children who may be the best fit for your family.
What type of documents will you need?
We are required to have documents on every person living in the home including birth certificates, social security cards, driver’s license, and a physical from the doctor. Additional documentation is also needed including (but not limited to) vehicle registration and insurance, current marriage licenses, and previous divorce decrees (if applicable).
Do I need to be able to afford to care for additional children or have a certain amount of money?
No! We do not expect you to have extra money to care for additional children. We just need to see that you are able to meet your own expenses with your employment.
How expensive is the process?
Our agency does not charge a fee for the home study. The only expense that you may incur during this process is getting a physical at your doctor and anything that you may need to purchase for your home to meet safety standards, such as a fire extinguisher or carbon monoxide detector.
Am I able to choose what child or children live in my home?
Of course! We would never force you to take a child (or children) that you did not feel comfortable or able to parent. We will provide you with the information that we have about a child and are happy to seek out further information to questions you may have.
