Considering Becoming a Foster Parent?
You probably have questions—and you're not alone! Many foster parents spend time thinking about it before taking the leap. To help you get started, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.
1. Is there a need for foster parents in our community?
Yes. There’s a significant gap between the number of children in care and the families available to support them. While we have families in our communities, not enough are able or willing to meet the needs of children in the system.
2. Do I need to live in Tennessee to foster through Chambliss Center for Children?
Yes. You must be a Tennessee resident for at least six months to foster through our agency.
3. What are the basic requirements to foster?
To become a foster parent, you must:
Be a TN resident for 6+ months
Live in the Tennessee Valley region
Be at least 25 years old
Be financially stable and in good health
Pass background checks
Have a bedroom available for a child
4. Do I need to own a home?
No. You can rent or own your home.
5. What’s the process to become a foster parent?
You’ll complete Foster Parent Pre-Service Training and a home study.
6. How long does training take? How much does it cost?
Training is free and held one night a week for two months.
7. Why do children enter state custody?
Children are typically removed from their homes due to substantiated reports of abuse or neglect made to Child Protective Services.
8. What is the purpose of foster care?
Foster care provides temporary care for children until they can safely reunite with their birth families.
9. What’s the difference between fostering and adoption? Can foster parents adopt?
Fostering is intended to be temporary, with reunification as the goal. Adoption is a permanent, legal commitment to a child. If parental rights are terminated, foster parents may adopt the child in their care.
10. How much does fostering or adopting cost?
Both are free through the state and some private agencies. Families pursuing adoption only may incur fees for home studies through private agencies.
